This is a cold-weather drink rather than a coffee replacement. It is caffeine free, warming, and it takes about fifteen minutes, most of that unattended.

Fresh ginger and a cinnamon stick get simmered rather than steeped, which matters more than it sounds: ginger is a woody root and it needs real heat and time to give anything up. Lemon juice and a splash of apple cider vinegar go in off the heat, and MCT Oil Powder blends in for fat and body.

The quarter teaspoon of raw honey is deliberate. It is under 2 g of sugar in the whole mug, which will not move anyone out of ketosis, and it rounds off the sharp edges.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups filtered water
  • 2 tbsp fresh ginger root chopped
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 1/2 lemon juiced
  • 1/2 tsp apple cider vinegar
  • 1/4 tsp raw honey
  • 1 scoop MCT Oil Powder

Method

  1. Put the water in a small pot over medium heat.
  2. Add the chopped ginger and the cinnamon stick.
  3. Cover and bring to a simmer.
  4. Simmer for at least 10 minutes. Longer gives a stronger cup.
  5. Take the pot off the heat and pour through a fine mesh strainer into a mug.
  6. Stir in the lemon juice, apple cider vinegar, raw honey and MCT Oil Powder.
  7. Stir until fully dissolved, or blend for a few seconds if you want it frothy.
